Avant Goya, les artistes glorifiaient les batailles : g\u00e9n\u00e9raux triomphants, drapeaux au vent, h\u00e9ro\u00efsme romantis\u00e9. En cela, Le Trois Mai 1808 ouvre une voie que Picasso, Manet et bien d&rsquo;autres emprunteront apr\u00e8s lui.<\/p>\n<h2>Contexte historique<\/h2>\n<p>En 1808, Napol\u00e9on place son fr\u00e8re Joseph sur le tr\u00f4ne d&rsquo;Espagne. Le 2 mai, le peuple madril\u00e8ne se soul\u00e8ve contre les troupes fran\u00e7aises. La r\u00e9pression est imm\u00e9diate et brutale : d\u00e8s la nuit du 2 au 3 mai, des centaines de civils sont fusill\u00e9s aux abords de la colline du Pr\u00edncipe P\u00edo, \u00e0 Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>Goya, alors peintre de la cour, vit ces \u00e9v\u00e9nements de pr\u00e8s. Il observe, il retient, il souffre. Cependant, c&rsquo;est seulement apr\u00e8s la chute de Napol\u00e9on et le retour du roi Ferdinand VII, en 1814, que le gouvernement provisoire espagnol lui commande deux grandes toiles comm\u00e9moratives \u2014 \u00e0 sa propre suggestion. Le r\u00e9sultat d\u00e9passe de loin l&rsquo;\u0153uvre de commande officielle.<\/p>\n<p>Par ailleurs, l&rsquo;Europe artistique traverse alors une p\u00e9riode de profond bouleversement. Le Trois Mai 1808 s&rsquo;inscrit dans ce tournant tout en le transcendant.<\/p>\n<h2>Symbolisme et points \u00e0 observer<\/h2>\n<p>Placez-vous mentalement devant cette toile et laissez votre regard voyager. Voici ce qu&rsquo;il faut absolument remarquer.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>La lanterne au sol :<\/strong> c&rsquo;est la seule source de lumi\u00e8re dans une nuit d&rsquo;encre.
