Athens, Greece

Athens, the cradle of Western civilisation, preserves some of the greatest monuments of ancient Greek art and architecture. Towering above the city is the Acropolis with the Parthenon, designed by Ictinus and Callicrates in the fifth century BC.

    In 1687 the Parthenon was still largely intact, after twenty-one centuries. Then a Venetian mortar shell hit the Ottoman gunpowder store inside it.
